2016 Faculty

Last year’s faculty is made up of an outstanding group of Guest Conductors, Master-Class Instructors and Sectional Instructors. The faculty is passionate about their art and strive to motivate and share with their students the joy of achievement in making music. They come to the workshop from universities, colleges, professional ensembles, and private and public schools in Canada and the United States. They serve as motivators and role models for the instrumentalists by teaching artistry, discipline and appreciation of formal study.

  • Raymond BarilRaymond Baril | Top Level Conductor | Raymond Baril is Assistant Professor of Music and Section Head of the Wind and Brass Department at MacEwan University and, for the past 28 years, he has been the Director of the MacEwan University Jazz Ensemble. He is in his 17th season as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the New Edmonton Wind Sinfonia. Read more about Raymond.
  • Roberta BarilRoberta Baril | Third Level Conductor | Roberta Baril has taught in various junior and senior high band programs for Edmonton Public School over the last 35 years and is currently music director and Department Head of Fine Arts and International Languages at W.P. Wagner High School in Edmonton. Read more about Roberta.
  • Jane McLauchlinJane McLauchlin | Second Level Conductor | Jane McLauchlin has had a very successful career teaching middle school band, music and African Drumming in Calgary for 25 years. She received her Bachelor of Music from the University of Calgary, followed by her teaching certification and has taught at Ian Bazalgette, Sir John A. Macdonald, Senator Patrick Burns and most recently, Sir John Franklin School. Read more about Jane.
  • Michael CutlerMichael Cutler | First Level Conductor | Before becoming a Music Director with the Calgary Board of Education, Michael was a professional guitarist touring North America with Artists such as Randy Bachman, The Guess Who, Serena Ryder, and many more. He also honours his Czech heritage and has conducted and performed at various cities in the Czech Republic. Read more about Michael.

Master-Class Instructors

  • Taylor BerryTaylor Berry | Low Brass | Taylor Berry has been active in the Calgary music scene for more than a decade. She attended the University of Calgary, where she earned her degree in music (with a specialization in music education). She proceeded to complete the masters of teaching program, all while participating as a hired musician, clinician, and conductor in a variety of settings. Read more about Taylor.
  • Cédric BlaryCédric Blary | Clarinet | Cédric Blary has been entertaining Calgary audiences on clarinet, pan-flute, saxophone and voice for over 20 years. He has a B.MUS degree in performance from the University of Calgary and a Diploma from Mount Royal College (now University). Read more about Cédric.
  • Robert GeorgeRobert George | Bassoon | Robert George has been principle bassoonist for the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra and an instructor of bassoon, oboe and saxophone at the University of Lethbridge Conservatory of Music since 1993. He is music director of the IAM Music Society, where he conducts a community choir, a wind ensemble, and a chamber orchestra. Read more about Robert.
  • Nathan GingrichNathan Gingrich | Trombone | Nathan Gingrich received his Bachelor of Music education degree from the University of Regina. Continued studies led him to Weimar Germany where he got his advanced artist’s diploma in classical trombone performance and another degree in jazz and pop trombone performance from the Hochschule fuer Musik “Franz Liszt”.   • Richard HardingRichard Harding | Saxophone | Richard has worked as a professional saxophonist and educator in Calgary for over 20 years. He has performed with many outstanding local groups such as the Prime Time Big Band, Johnny Summers Little Big Band, Calgary Jazz Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, Lorna MacLachlan Quintet, Soul Providers and Penguins on Broadway.Read more about Richard.
  • Nadine HorneNadine Horne | Oboe | Nadine has been actively teaching oboe performance and technique to junior and senior high school students in Calgary for over 13 years. She also teaches Early Childhood Music. Mrs. Horne uses Kodaly Method principles in all of her lessons to help improve ear training and overall musicality. Read more about Nadine.
  • Laurie MatiationLaurie Matiation | French Horn | Originally from Brandon, Manitoba, Laurie is currently Third Horn with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. She began her professional career in 1978 as second horn of the Atlantic Symphony, and has been a member of the CPO since 1983. Read more about Laurie.
  • Mike SakatchMike Sakatch | Percussion | Mike Sakatch has been the percussion instructor at the Calgary Regional Summer Band Workshop since 1984. After a 30 year career teaching instrumental music at Lord Beaverbrook High School, he retired from full time teaching. He is currently teaching the percussion classes at Lord Beaverbrook and William Aberhart High Schools. Read more about Mike.
  • Mary SullivanMary Sullivan | Flute | Arriving in Calgary in 2003, Mary Sullivan has been an active member of the city’s bustling music scene. As a performer she has been in demand in multiple musical contexts. She has performed with the Calgary Philharmonic and Red Deer Symphonies. Read more about Mary.
  • André WickenheiserAndré Wickenheiser | Trumpet | André began his musical studies at Mount Royal University where he completed an Artist Diploma in jazz performance. From there, he went on to finish both a Bachelors Degree, and Masters Degree in jazz performance at McGill University in Montreal. Read more about André.

Sectional Instructors

  • Scott Campbell Scott Campbell | Scott Campbell is the Band Director at MidSun School in south Calgary, a program consisting of approximately 260 students in grades 7 through 9. In recent years, his jazz and concert bands have been awarded numerous awards, including the Floyd Williamson Trophy for Most Outstanding Junior High Concert Band at the 2010 Alberta International Band Festival - Calgary.   • Nate Waters Nate Waters | Nate Waters has been studying and performing saxophone in a myriad of styles for almost twenty years. He has a MMus in Saxophone Performance and a BMus in Secondary Music Education from the University of Calgary, as well as a BEd in Secondary Music Education from the University of British Columbia.   • Trevor Waters Trevor Waters | Trevor Waters has been involved in public music education in Calgary for more than 35 years. He has taught in several schools throughout the city (both junior high and high school), and worked with students in a variety of classes, including Band, Choir, Jazz Band, Jazz Choir and Musical Theater.
