Career Planning - Four Steps to Success

The key to successful career planning is to find work that inspires you… work that gives you a sense of accomplishment… work that provides a chance for advancement… work that pays what you need.

Step 1.

Discover Your Personal Strengths and interests through self-assessments. Let your personality determine your your career direction by learning about:

  • Discover Your Personal StrengthsInterest inventories help you compare your likes and dislikes with existing careers
  • Value inventories help you discover what is most important to you
  • Skills assessments help you focus on your natural skills
  • Personality inventories help you understand what motivates you

Step 2.

Explore Different Careers and work environments by researching:

  • Explore Different CareersOccupational profiles provide information on day-to-day responsibilities, working conditions, education requirements, career alternatives and salaries
  • Labour market information will help you research what occupations are growing and which ones are declining in Alberta
  • Post-Secondary requirements will provide you with a compass for what courses and grades you will need

Step 3.

Choose a Career that works for you by evaluating and narrowing down your options through:

  • Choose a CareerListing the pros and cons of each career
  • Comparing your personal strengths and interests with your career goals
  • Deciding which career fulfills both current and future goals
  • Knowing that your decision can continue to evolve

Step 4.

Plan Achievable Goals and develop stategies to reach them by:

  • Organizing your goals into smaller steps
  • Identifying actions for each step
  • Utilizing helpful people and resources
